IU Health creates online resource to empower doctor/patient conversations

0

“Strength in Knowledge,” presented by IU Health, is a free, interactive resource library and multi-format micro-site which can be found at iuhealth.org/knowledge. The site, which can be easily accessed from desktop computers and mobile devices including smartphones and tablets, was designed especially for healthcare consumers and caregivers seeking to educate themselves about some of the most advanced treatment options for their condition so they can participate in more meaningful and engaging conversations with their physicians.

Visitors to the site can find short, “bite-sized” videos, podcasts and articles featuring dozens of Indiana-based physicians, specialists and researchers explaining the “how’s”, “why’s” and key benefits of some of the latest clinical breakthroughs and innovative surgical techniques being developed at IU Health facilities across the state.

The site, which is updated with new content every Monday, features experts discussingtreatments such as innovative reconstruction techniques for sports-related injuries such as a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), cosmetic surgery for breast cancer survivors and GPS-like navigation technologies used in brain surgery. The site also highlights medical innovations ranging from cancer vaccines that use a patient’s own white-blood cells to ward off aggressive brain tumors to cardiovascular treatments that stimulate the spinal cord to improve the heart’s pumping function.

“It’s empowering to know your options,” said Deanna Willis, M.D., a primary care physician with IU Health Physicians and an associate professor of family medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. “If you have a medical condition, you’ll want to know what the latest treatments are so you can talk to your physician about which treatment is best for you. Not everyone needs the latest advancements in technology, but knowing what options are available creates a deeper discussion with your doctor.”
