Some Hamilton County parking spaces will become parks this Friday, September 21, as part of nationwide Park(ing) Day.
National Park(ing) Day touts the value of green space and encourages communities to take back their urbanized areas. In Hamilton County, our one day parking lot installation of eight parks throughout the county celebrates our great spaces and reminds residents and visitors just how important green space is in making Hamilton County a great place to live and visit. Hamilton County has more than 4,000 acres of park and green space and more than a dozen trail systems. Green space is an important aspect of quality of place, and Hamilton County communities have made it a priority.
Some plans for Park(ing) Day in Hamilton County include:
Conner Prairie will transform a parking space at the Kroger on 116th and Allisonville Road in Fishers into a mini Civil War camp where soldiers will talk to visitors around a fire and serve coffee made as it would have been in 1863. Visitors can also explore a Civil War tent, and play games.
The Fishers Parks Department will have a space in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at 116th Street and Commercial Drive with environmental education and games for children.
Hamilton County Parks plans an oasis with a park bench and flowers near Clay Terrace’s Kona Grill as homage to parks as a place to simply experience nature and relax.
At the Nickel Plate Arts Campus in downtown Noblesville and in downtown Arcadia parking spaces will be converted into art experiences.
A complete list of participating organizations as well as the locations of the parking lots is attached with this email. Most parking lots are open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Individual locations may vary slightly.
The Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau promotes tourism growth through strategic marketing, hospitality and community development initiatives. It has welcome centers in Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville.
