Current Publishing, LLC, based here since its founding, celebrates its sixth anniversary today.

The company, whose principals are Carmel residents Brian Kelly, president, and Steve Greenberg, executive vice president, launched its first newspaper, Current in Carmel, on Oct. 24, 2006, while working from temporary space in an office building at 103rd and North Meridian streets. Today, it works from owned space at 30 S. Range Line Rd. in the heart of the city.

Other titles followed in the Carmel edition’s wake, each just as successful as its predecessor. Current in Westfield was launched in January 2008, Current in Noblesville in September 2009, Current in Fishers in January 2011 and Current in Zionsville in March. The company has plans for additional expansion. Weekly circulation is 104,826.

“Brian and I have no way to prove this, but we believe we could be the fastest-growing newspaper company in the United States,” Greenberg said. “We’re confident we’re the fastest-growing in Indiana.”

Kelly said Current’s rapid growth came not only during the recession but also at the behest of advertisers large and small. “We had always planned to have the Hamilton County papers we publish, but not on as rapid a timeline as we’ve followed,” Kelly said. “Advertisers truly urged us into each of the subsequent markets ahead of our plan. If you don’t answer your advertisers’ needs, you’re not going to be very successful. We answer needs here. We also prove newspapers work.”

All Current products are based on the results of independent marketplace research, from which the owners learned exactly what the readership expects each week in its newspaper, “and that’s exactly what we provide for them,” Greenberg said. “News is what our readers say it is.”

The owners said the company is on pace for yet another record year, which has been the case since 2007. “We resonate with readers, and they, in turn, patronize our advertising partners, ” Kelly said. “Couple that with 100-percent penetration by U.S. Mail of every community we serve, and it becomes an extremely powerful, compelling story.”
It has been a team effort, the owners agree.

“Our staff – those with us now and those who’ve come and gone – has been instrumental in our growth,” Greenberg said. “So, too, have been our growing roster of advertising partners and the readers themselves. In no way would this anniversary or our successes have been attainable without those three incredibly important groups.”
