Carmel Clay Schools Superintendent to step down June 2013

Dr. Jeff Swensson, Superintendent of the Carmel Clay Schools, informed the Board of Education on December 17, 2012, that he will be stepping down from his post at the end of June, 2013.

As he spoke at the December meeting of the Board of Education, Swensson compared himself to a runner in a relay race. Swensson said that the time was right to “pass the leadership baton.” Citing a wide range of accomplishments during his tenure with the school corporation, including strong student achievement data, improvements in instruction and curriculum, school safety advances, focused professional growth for all staff members, and important increases in communications with stakeholders, Swensson thanked the Carmel Clay School community for their support.

Swensson gave credit to his fellow educators for their tireless and exceptional efforts on behalf of students in the school district. The out-going Superintendent also thanked students, their parents, and the wide range of community partners who make the Carmel Clay Schools so outstanding.

“The Board is grateful for the positive leadership Jeff has provided this community as the superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools. His unwavering focus on what is best for our students has continued to support this high-performing school district. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors,” said, Layla Spanenberg, Board of Education President.

Having served the Carmel Clay Schools as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment prior to working as Superintendent, Swensson’s six-year service with the school corporation has seen the passage of a general fund referendum, the involvement of the district in developing a draft to create Performance-Qualified School District legislation, the awarding of District Accreditation from the largest school accreditation organization in the USA, and recognition of the excellence of the Carmel Clay Schools from a wide range of national media sources.

In making his announcement at this time, Swensson commented that he wanted to give the Board of Education ample time to select the next Superintendent “for our outstanding school corporation.”

Swensson indicated that he’s looking forward to the next steps he will take after the conclusion of his service to the school district. Between now and next June, however, he emphasized his dedication to sustaining his focus on quality outcomes and high expectations throughout the school corporation.
