Doug Carter

Former county sheriff Doug Carter will continue his career in law enforcement as the state’s top cop. On Dec. 19, Gov.-elect Mike Pence named Carter the new superintendent of the Indiana State Police. He will replace Paul Whitesell.

Carter’s new job presents a problem in Hamilton County, where he ran unopposed and was elected to the Hamilton County Commissioners in November. He is taking over a seat left vacant by Steve Holt, who did not seek re-election. Carter was scheduled to take office in January but is expected to resign because he cannot hold both offices.

Republican precinct committeemen have 30 days to choose his replacement once Carter resigns. The announcement came at press time and exact details are not yet known.

Carter served as Hamilton County Sheriff for eight years, from 2003 to 2011. Following his second term, Carter became a public safety and justice specialist for RQAW. His focus is specifically geared toward architectural solutions supporting the public safety and justice spectrums. Carter was an ISP Master Trooper from July 1984 to December 2002.
