A tale of four laptops

There are three great evils in this world: car problems, computer problems and raisins in otherwise delicious cookies.

Today’s story is of the second greatest evil – computer problems. While some might like raisins co-mingled with other sweets, and others might never experience car trouble, I think we can all agree that the worst thing ever is having a dysfunctional computer.

If you can’t stomach a harrowing sob story, now might be the time to look away.

It all started Dec. 14. My friends had left my apartment for the evening, and the following Saturday was a big day – Butler vs. IU at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

As I prepared for bed, I bumped my precariously perched Toshiba laptop, knocking it off the arm of my couch. I fumbled the catch, and it landed on the charger sticking out of its side. I removed the cord. The plug was damaged but looked usable. Note: If you ever think, “This is broken, but I can still use it,” do yourself a favor and step away from whatever broken thing you think is operable.

I put the charger back into the charging port on the Toshiba. A piece breaks off inside. I can’t get it out.

It’s OK. I have my old Gateway lying around. Long story short, it lasts for one deadline just before the holidays. The morning after said deadline, I try to turn the laptop on. It refuses to comply.

Now I have two broken laptops and four days before deadline and Christmas Eve.

But I get a loner! And it works!

I’m able to get some work done on a Friday, and it seems things are looking up. That is, until Saturday morning when the loner laptop refuses to turn on.

Pause and assess the damage for one moment.

In the span of eight days, I broke one laptop, burnt out another and was lulled into a sense of security by a loner.

Now with about 48 hours until deadline, I have to do the unthinkable – buy a new laptop.

Incidentally, I love my new Lenovo laptop but what an absolutely awful lead up to the holidays.

It could have been worse. I could have had my car break down with only oatmeal raisin cookies to snack on until a tow-truck arrived.
