What happened: Town Manager Scott Fadness briefed the council on the proposed 2014 budget.

What it means: Fadness provided some details about the 2014 budget. Among other items, Fadness said Police Chief George Kehl made operating budget cuts to make space for hiring a new civilian analyst who would be the beginning of an intelligence unit at FPD.

“One of the things that we’re trying to work on is really becoming proactive in our ability to predict where crime trends are headed,” Fadness said. Fadness said the 2014 budget is slated to be balanced with a positive balance of more than $3,000.

What’s next: Fadness has been briefing the council on the budget during work sessions for many council meetings. The budget is scheduled to go before the council at a regular meeting for the first time Oct. 7.

What happened: A resolution allowing the construction of a communication tower at FFD Station 94, 10701 Cumberland Rd., was amended and approved.

What it means: Hamilton County’s communication systems are in need of a major overhaul. As part of a $15 million revamp, the county needs to build a monopole tower at the fire station in Geist. To add complexity to the issue, there is a large chunk of the area that receives substandard radio communications because of topography issues. Two residents remonstrated against the tower’s placement. Ultimately, two amendments were made for the resolution. One made it clear that the tower would only move forward if the FAA signed off on the plan. The other clarified it so the council could not monetize the monopole without going through an approval process in the public eye.

What’s next: Before the Hamilton County Commissioners can move forward on the project, they’ll need FCC and FAA approval.

What happened: A request to amend a design contract for Rundell Ernsteberger Associates work on Cyntheanne Park South was approved.

What it means: A split council vote broken by Clerk-Treasurer Linda Gaye Cordell put the brakes on the request in August. The design firm was requesting additional funds as the new park’s scope, including attractions, increased, bringing the money needed for the project from $2.3 up to $3.5 million.

What’s next: REA can continue designing the park, which will be located at Cyntheanne Road and 101st Street.
