William J. Hughes, judge of Hamilton Superior Court 3, has announced that he intends to seek re-election. Hughes is the longest serving judge in Hamilton County, having served in Superior Three since its inception.

“I have been honored to serve the citizens of Hamilton County since the court began operation,” Hughes said. “In my role as judge, I have been able to be a part of ensuring that our citizens are protected, civil liberties are preserved and the people of Hamilton County have a place to come to resolve their disputes where the rule of law meets compassion to find justice.”

Hughes is a longtime resident of Hamilton County. Prior to assuming the bench, he was a partner in the firm of Campbell Kyle Proffitt, LLP. He is a member of the Indiana, Hamilton County and American Bar Associations; the Indiana Judges Association and the Indiana Judicial Conference, where he currently serves as chairman of the Judicial Election Committee.

He teaches continuing legal education on both state and national levels.

Brian Poindexter, Carmel City Court judge, who on Oct. 1 in “Current in Carmel” announced his intention to run, will challenge Hughes for the bench. Poindexter has served as judge of the Carmel City Court since 2009, when then-Governor Mitch Daniels appointed him.

He was re-elected in 2011.

“Throughout this campaign I will advocate three important projects,” said Poindexter. “The expansion of the Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program, the creation of a Veteran’s Assistance Court and the building of a domestic violence shelter to house and protect the victims of violence and abuse in the county in which I serve.”

Hughes said, “Hamilton County is a great place to live and raise a family. I am proud that my contributions as judge of Hamilton Superior Court 3 have helped to make that statement true. I ask for your support on May 6.”
