David A. Deering, 75, of Westfield, died Feb. 21, 2014.
One of 13 children, David began working in his family’s dry cleaning business in Carmel. It was at that business that he met – and fell in love with – a local high school cheerleader who was visiting his sister. Several months later, the two were married and began a 51-year journey together.
David opened his first dry cleaning business in Sheridan in 1963 after he completed basic training in the Indiana National Guard. In 1969, David and his wife opened Perfect Touch Cleaners in Broad Ripple. He operated that business until 1990. Under David’s ownership, Perfect Touch Cleaners grew into one of the largest volume single-location dry cleaners in Indiana. In later years, David and his wife operated Deering Business Brokerage of Westfield.
David was very devoted to his family and extended family. He enjoyed covertly slipping a few bucks to nieces and nephews for Christmas presents, clothes, trips and other assorted reasons.
David was a regular at Fox Prairie Golf Course in Noblesville. He was a longtime member of the Fox Prairie Men’s Club and won the Calcutta and multiple Four Ball Championships. He scored his four holes-in-one there. Many lifelong friendships were made at “The Fox.” His fine touch on the greens translated to pool tables throughout central Indiana, most notably the snooker table at Pooh’d’s Pool Hall in old Carmel. David was a dedicated fan of Indiana Basketball (the Bob Knight years) and Butler basketball. He was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and was once a season ticket holder of the Indiana Pacers.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Judi, of Westfield; two sons, Jeff (Ann) Deering of Indianapolis, and Yancy (Jennifer) Deering of Cincinnati; three granddaughters, Jessica, Erin and Heidi; a grandson, Hugh; four brothers Jan (Linda), Milton Jr., Richard and Matthew (Jeanne) Deering; four sisters, Nancy Bond, Lana Wilson (Bill), Linda Miller (Victor) and Debbie Miller (Tom); and multiple nieces, nephews and extended family.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Ruth; and four brothers James, Robert, Ben and John.
Visitation will be conducted at Leppert Mortuary’s Carmel Chapel, 900 N. Rangeline Rd., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 1.
In lieu of flowers, David’s family requests donations in his honor to the American Heart Association or The American Legion Post 155.
