American Planning Association award to be presented at spring conference in March

On March 21, the Town of Fishers will be awarded the 2014 Planning Award for Outstanding Plan by the Indiana Chapter of the American Planning Association during its spring conference at Ball State University. This award comes after the landmark decision in December to implement the Community Art Master Plan, and is a tribute to the organizations that collaborated to bring this vision to life.

“Arts and culture play a key role in creating meaningful public spaces,” stated Town Council representative David George. “This plan outlines Fishers’ commitment to community art as an essential component of economic development, and provides opportunities where people can interact with art and one another.”

The Community Art Master Plan is the first policy framework approved in Hamilton County that outlines a long-term vision for public art. The initiative defines community art in Fishers, celebrates art’s ability to engage residents and establishes priorities for future projects.

“The Fishers Arts Council identifies new arts opportunities and connects creative people, organizations, businesses and volunteers together to bring those opportunities to life in Fishers,” said Fishers Arts Council President Jocelyn Vare. “Seeing this begin as an idea and evolve into a working plan for the community is exciting, and we are very proud to have been a part of the process.”

The Town of Fishers worked closely with The Fishers Arts Council and the Fishers Cultural Tourism Group to combine input from the art community with municipal policy, creating a robust plan with built-in credibility.
