Upcoming carmel police citizen’s class

Commentary by Lt. Joe Bickel, Carmel Police Department

The Carmel Police Department is proud to present a program that provides insight to the public on the operations of our department. This is an eleven week program. The instructors are all members of the Carmel Police Department. They will provide instruction and information concerning a particular area of their profession. This is NOT a police officer candidate school, but a means by which the department can allow the citizens of Carmel to see how the department operates.

Class size will be limited to sixteen people, so we ask that only those truly interested in making a commitment to the class apply. Eight classes must be attended to successfully pass the Citizen’s Police Academy. A background check will be conducted on all applicants and those with criminal backgrounds may not be accepted into this program. This will not be an open forum to discuss previous law enforcement contacts or grievances, but an opportunity for applicants to learn about the department and for the department to learn about the concerns of the applicants. All applicants must be at least eighteen years of age.

The next class is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. Each class will last approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours at the Carmel Police Headquarters. Classes will be filled on a first come first served basis. Applications for the September 4th class must be turned in by 3pm on August 29th to be considered for the fall class.

Applications are available at the front desk at the Carmel Police Department, or at www.carmel.in.gov or [email protected].
