Doctors Direct is a first-of-its-kind medical clinic in Indiana. Located in the Bonn Building in the Saxony area in Fishers, Dr. Derek Murphy’s goal is to take care of the community’s mind, body, and spirit while eliminating the unpredictability of the business side of medicine.
“After feeling burned out by seeing the volume trend in medicine of getting people in an out, I knew I wanted to open a different kind of practice,” said Dr. Murphy. “I wanted to go back to being a patient advocate and really get one-on-one time with those I treat.”
To allow more time for patient conversations, Murphy’s office books only 16 half-hour internal medicine appointments each day. Acute immediate care patients are also welcome.
“Our focus is trying to get better health care access to patients of all backgrounds by focusing on transparency, availability, and accessibility,” Murphy said. “We are perfect for the nearly 20 percent of the population with a large deductible. We work perfectly to complement the individuals that still have solid health care packages. We are also a great option for the uninsured people in our community.”
Doctors Direct uses a flat fee model for services.
“Insurance companies can sometimes get in the way of quality health care,” Murphy said. “Our office does not bill any insurance companies, but we file reimbursement documentation so that patients get money back from their insurance companies, as applicable.”
Murphy will gladly treat patients on Medicare, but like all other patients, they must pay the fee for service at the time of completion. Doctors Direct does not bill Medicare.
By eliminating the expense of insurance, Doctors Direct can share the cost savings to patients. Murphy keeps prices transparent, meaning patients can see the cost of what he provides compared to the market value of a minute-clinic or a traditional doctor’s office for the same service. For example, Doctors Direct charges $59 for an office visit, while other clinics routinely charge $165.
Murphy said he hopes to see more clinics like Doctors Direct to bring the control of medicine back to the physician.
“We provide good care, but keep it simple,” he said.
