Despite Steve Wood being absent, the Noblesville Common Council still had seven members at its Dec. 9 meeting as special guest Peyton Butts joined the elected officials. Butts, a third-grade student at Stony Creek Elementary School, served as “President for a Night.”

Peyton sat beside Common Council President Mark Boice and assisted him in conducting meeting.

“It was really exciting,” Peyton said.

If he had been asked to create a new ordinance or law, Peyton said more recess would be nice. Peyton said his favorite part of the meeting was hearing Noblesville Fire Chief Ken Gilliam present the 2015 agreement with Firefighters Local 4416. Peyton said he wants to be a fireman when he grows up.

The opportunity to join the council came from a raffle at Stony Creek that was won by Peyton’s parents Jim and Billie Butts. Jim is a senior firefighter/EMT with the Noblesville Fire Dept.

“He thinks the mayor is his buddy,” Billie said. “Any chance he gets to spend time with the mayor, he is all about it.”

The evening also marked Peyton’s ninth birthday.

“It’s exciting. He’s our youngest and he is growing up,” Billie said.
