A year in review: Collin’s favorite movies of 2014

Another year done. There were some great movies this year, some not so great ones and a ton of films I missed. Out of the ones I did see though, here are some of my personal favorites for the year in no particular order.

Guardians of the Galaxy

It’s hard to go wrong with this one. This Marvel movie that didn’t feel like a Marvel movie stood out as being a fresh breath of air in the superhero genre. Lots of fun and action packed.

The Lego Movie

This was one of my absolute favorites this year. This movie was hilariously written, amazing to watch, funny and had an excellent message with tons of heart. Great for any age if you enjoy fun.

Gone Girl

This year featured some really dark films and Gone Girl was one of my favorites. Chilling score, great performances, especially from Rosamund Pike, and extremely well crafted. This stylized thriller is a joy to watch.

The Babadook

This probably flew under most people’s radar, but this superbly made Australian psychological horror film creeped me out and kept me engaged with the story and characters which is quite a feat for a horror film these days. It’s just so well made on every level and the ending takes a little thought, but this accessible and creepy flick deserves more attention.

Snowpiercer

This creative take on the post-apocalyptic genre was such a joy to watch.  It takes the classic class struggle movie and puts it in a new and interesting environment and runs with it so confidently. Recently it was added to Netflix so you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Interstellar

Easily one of the most incredible movies I’ve ever seen. Its stunning visuals and emotional story really hit home for me as it touches on what it really means to be a part of humanity. Some people love to point out its flaws, but all movies have flaws and to dwell in that instead of letting the story take you is missing the point entirely. It might be my favorite from this year.

The Raid 2

Mind blowing fight scenes, enticing plot and did I mention how good those fights were? If you want to see a gritty violent, action packed movie, do yourself a favor and watch the Raid 2.

Calvary

Oh man was this movie great. Sharp dialogue, excellent acting and direction and a unique story fuel what might be one of my favorite dark comedies in recent memory. This film is an enticing mystery with an interesting dose of philosophy mixed in and one that I hope picks up some Oscar nominations.

Edge of Tomorrow

What an incredibly underrated and overlooked movie. Edge of Tomorrow was written off as just another Tom Cruise movie and it ended up being so much more than that. This movie is Groundhogs day meets Independence Day and boy was it fun to watch.

Honorable Mentions

Under the Skin, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Nightcrawler

I somehow managed to miss a lot of well-reviewed films like Birdman, Foxcatcher, Whiplash, Grand Budapest Hotel and Boyhood, but I had a lot of fun at the movies this year. If you haven’t seen some of the films I mentioned I highly recommend you check them out and if you don’t like them, well feel free to find me and yell at me or something.
