Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard was quoted today in The Washington Post.

But he wasn’t talking about a political issue. It’s because his hotel caught on fire.

Brainard is spending a few days in the nation’s capital to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the Capital Hilton in downtown Washington. But on Jan. 19, alarms failed to sound and guests were alerted by smells of smoke in the hotel.

The Washington Post reported that the cause of the fire isn’t known at this time and that nobody was hurt. Brainard told the Post that even the smoke alarm he pulled didn’t work as thick smoke filled the hallways.

Mayor Hillary Schieve of Reno, Nev. posted a photo of the hotel evacuation and called it “pandemonium,” on her Twitter account.

Shortly after the evacuation, Brainard talked to Current in Carmel over the phone for an interview about his official filing for re-election. He said that he hoped he was able to get back in his hotel room. All guests returned to their rooms later that day.

“I hope my clothes are OK,” he joked at the time.
