John Semler, 16, has earned Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout, which only 4 percent of Scouting’s national membership attains.

Semler, a member of Troop 107, chartered by Christ United Methodist Church, is a sophomore at Westfield High School and has been involved in Scouting for nine years. Semler achieved the Eagle rank after demonstrating leadership as troop guide, instructor and patrol leader before completing his Eagle project.

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Semler built a covered park swing in Asa Bales Park. Park visitors in the Westfield community will no longer have to fight sunrays or afternoon rain showers to enjoy the comfort of the swing. There were about 20 volunteers who dedicated time during April 2013 to assist Semler in completing his service project.
