Zionsville can place another feather in its cap, as the town has been ranked the second safest city in the nation according to ADTsecurity.com. The analysis is based on data from the 2013 FBI Uniform Crime report. Each city received an overall safety score based on the number of violent crimes and property crimes, weighted accordingly and relative to population.

The town’s safety score of 96.4 put it slightly behind Glen Cove, N.Y., which earned a safety score of 96.6. With a smaller population, Glen Cove had fewer burglaries per resident than Zionsville.

Zionsville Police Chief Robert Knox wasn’t surprised at the ranking – aside from Zionsville being listed second instead of first. “The data doesn’t lie,” he said.

“We can’t take credit for all of it, but I feel like we do our part by trying to maintain our stats as a safe community,” he said.  “A slow day at the office is a good day for the community.”

Despite the ranking he cautioned that maintaining a safe community is something that needs to be important to everyone.

“We can’t rest on our laurels,” he said.  “It’s a team effort.  Everybody in Zionsville is part of that team.”

Zionsville was the only Indiana municipality in the top 25. Every city in the 2013 FBI crime report was analyzed. This is the first time ADT has created a safe cities list.
