As the Hamilton County Leadership Academy enters its 25th anniversary year, Current is highlighting local leaders who have helped build and sustain the program, which focuses on strengthening our community by developing informed leaders. In June, another class of engaged citizens will join the 600-plus graduates already working to make a difference.

CIF-CIG-COM- 0209-HCLA Meet you leader.

Mark LaBarr, HCLA Class of 2013

Hometown: Bloomington

Lives: Fishers

Works: Noblesville

Family: “Two sweet daughters, both very good students; one is a gainfully employed college grad and one is currently in college.”

Career: Government & Community Relations Manager at Duke Energy, where he has worked for 30 years. LaBarr, who describes himself as a recovering engineer, has served in various engineering positions in several locations around the state.

Community involvement: Several boards and committees, including the HCLA board of directors.

Nice to know: “In my first job as a paperboy in Bloomington, I delivered John Mellencamp’s paper before everybody knew who he was.”

Biggest HCLA takeaway: “While Hamilton County is fortunate to have a concentration of wealth and talent, there is need for assistance and services. Hamilton County is also fortunate to have many talented leaders who answer the call to provide services.”

Favorite HCLA curriculum activity: “Well, I sure learned a lot about corn at Beck’s! And I became aware of Sonny Beck’s leadership qualities.”

Most vivid HCLA memory: “Getting to know the unique personalities of my class of 2013 classmates and hearing many of their hilarious stories at our kickoff retreat.”

Most valuable lesson learned through HCLA: “It was through my HCLA experience that I learned about servant leadership.”

Last book you read? Naming Elephants by Sue Annis Hammond.

Favorite Hamilton County restaurant: “Wild Ginger in Fishers. I have John Wechsler with Launch Fishers to thank for that.”
