Residents of Westfield can expect two dramatic road projects beginning in late spring and early summer of this year.

Jeremy Loller, director of Public Works, said the two big projects to look forward to and planned to be completed by the end of the year are the extension of Westfield Boulevard and the Mill Street Extension.

Westfield Boulevard extension

Westfield Boulevard, also known as South Union, is planned to extend under U.S. 31 and tying into 151st Street to the west of Target with a roundabout. Loller said construction should begin in early summer and is hoped to end before the year does.

The project has been in the works for three years in terms of land acquisition and development, and it was then delayed to allow changes for Target accommodating a truck entrance.

Mill Street extension

“The other major road project seen in 2016 is the Mill Street extension, which will extend it south to tie back into Union Street to create the southern and western border of what is to be the Grand Junction Plaza,” Loller said.

The project is planned to start in spring and end late this year.

“Part of the project is a regional detention piece to mitigate flooding issue that went on downtown a few years ago,” Loller said.

The Mill Street extension is the beginning of the $25 million Grand Junction Plaza project, and more development will be allowed to be underway after Mill Street is finished.
