Serving at Heart Change Ministries

CIZ COM 0419 Heart Change 3

The program meets on Mondays and Wednesdays and always begins with a devotional. All the mothers and children gather for a time of worship. Here, sitting with Cathy Dwyer in the front row, from left, are Ann Ost holding baby Zaire Thompkins, Shana Miller and on Dwyer’s right, Abby Alley.

Cathy Dwyer and Celeste Burks, both of Zionsville, are among the volunteers at Heart Change Ministries in Indianapolis. The ministry focuses on creating relationships among mothers, those in need and volunteers who feel called to walk with them. While the emphasis is on a spiritual connection, in practical terms through “Mother’s University” the mothers also take classes in life skills, including such areas as nutrition, health and caring for children. Beyond those foundational skills, the program also offers help for mothers wanting to get their GED, develop a résumé and find a job. While the mothers are in school, their kids are learning as well in preschool. The program operates in extra classrooms at Oaks Academy Middle School, E. 16th St., Indianapolis.
