Grants awarded – The LIDS Foundation, the philanthropic support arm of Zionsville-based retailer LIDS Sports Group, has named its 2016 Tip the Hat Award grant recipients. The Foundation’s national grant program provided $300,000 in funding to five deserving nonprofits this year, including: A Kid Again, Little Wish Foundation, Nine13sports, Our Military Kids, and The BASE. This is the fourth consecutive year the Foundation has distributed the Tip the Hat Award grants, bringing its grand total to date to $840,000.

Hazardous waste collection – Boone Co. Highway Dept. will hold a hazardous waste collection day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30 at 1955 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon. Items that will be accepted include: CFL bulbs, insecticides, tires, aerosols, electronics, small propane tanks, oil based paints and thinners, pool chemicals, car batteries, etc. For more information, call 765-483-0687.

Nature Center Programs – Spring Wildflower Walk, 1 to 3 p.m. on April 30 at Zionsville Nature Sanctuary, 690 Beech St. Join Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock as we discover what’s blooming along the trails. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture their beauty.

Letters to military – The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the most letters collected and sent to military personnel in one month (10,000 or more). Hammerle 5K run/walk – The community is invited to join in the second annual Megan Hammerle Memorial 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m. on May 14 at the Lebanon High School football field. Net proceeds will benefit the Megan Suzanne Hammerle Memorial Scholarship fund. Online registration is available at http://getmeregistered.com/MeganHammerleMemorial5K. Paper registrations are available at the Lebanon High School Athletic Office.

Free diploma classes – Free classes are available in Lebanon for persons wanting to earn their High School Equivalency diploma (formerly GED). Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the bottom floor of the Lebanon Public Library, 104 E. Showchoirs Finale – Zionsville Showchoirs, Inc. presents Finale at 7 p.m. on May 13 and 14 at Zionsville Performing Arts Center. The show features the Royalaires and the Choralaires performing. Tickets are $17.50 and can be purchased in advance at www.zchoirs.com. A reception for alumni, sponsors and friends will be held following each performance. Also, a silent auction will precede each show, beginning at 6 p.m.

Free movie nights – Whitestown Parks presents Free Movie Nights at the Whitestown Municipal Complex. All movies begin at 8 p.m. Popcorn and bottled water are provided at no charge. Movie lineup includes: Minions – May 14; The Peanuts Movie – June 11; The Avengers Age of Ultron – July 9; The Good Dinosaur – Aug. 13.

Poetry reading – Brick Street Poetry presents a poetry reading in honor of National Poetry Month. Adrian Matejka of Indiana University will read at noon on April 27 in the Indianapolis Artsgarden, 110 W. Washington St. The reading is free and open to the public. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lunch while enjoying the reading.

Rain barrel workshop – Zionsville Parks will hold a rain barrel workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 18 at Zionsville Town Hall, Community Room. Learn how to build, install, maintain and even decorate a rain barrel for your home. Rain barrel kits are available to purchase. The workshop is free. A rain barrel kit may be purchased for $45. Heavy trash collection – The Town of Zionsville will provide a heavy trash collection day during the week of May 9 on your regular collection day. This is an opportunity to dispose of items not normally accepted by the weekly trash service. For more information, visit www.zionsville-in.gov and type Heavy Trash in the search box.

BCSSI art contest – Boone Co. Senior Services presents its third annual art contest for individuals age 60 and over. Entries in painting and photography will be accepted from 2 to 4 p.m. April 28 at the Lebanon Public Library, 104 E.
