The original deck from the custom home build was undersized.  And, consequently,  under used. Western exposure evening sun blasted the small living space, further distracting from the hoped for fun around dinnertime. Lake views and the wonderful walking path invite an abundance of walkers, but also interrupts gatherings from a privacy perspective.

Privacy solutions

These common buzz kills to joyful living encourage several creative solutions that were tickled out during the consultation and design phase. The solutions may carry a similar theme between designs/projects. Yet the solutions are often unique and custom.

The originally benign deck was expanded considerably and carpeted with premium cedar lumber.  Cedar is a warm wood that feels luxurious and manages the Hoosier climate well. Notice the modern black aluminum spindles that seem to disappear and open up the glamorous lake views. Cedar handrail ties the structure together with grand steps to the lush lawn.

Finding shade was imperative, and the overhead pergola offers just enough respite to invite guests outside. A privacy screen was recessed into the exterior beams and fights off the late evening sun as it dips below the protection of the pergola. A thoughtfully placed shade tree promises protection a few years down the road.

This incredible theme of luxe outdoor living carries a few strategic issues with it to be enjoyed at its fullest.  Framing views, developing shade and a sense of privacy are often the most important of those.
