Answers for Autism was founded 17 years ago by parents with children on the autism spectrum. The 16th annual Answers for Autism Walk,  the group’s largest fundraiser, is planned for the end of this month.

“We get anywhere between 800 and 1,000 people. It’s more like a festival than just a walk,” Vice President and Walk Coordinator Patty Reed said. “We have bounce houses. We have an auction. We have a big tent of activities for the children. It’s a big festival for individuals with autism in mind so all the activities are geared toward children on the spectrum since most of us are parents. The money we raise we give out through grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Indiana that serve individuals with autism.”

Through the years, Answers for Autism has provided $580,000 to programs that include summer camps, job training, sensory rooms in schools, speakers and Project Lifesaver.

“Project Lifesaver is the largest single project we have funded,” Reed said. “It provides bracelets for individuals with autism who tend to wander, so they (can be found) very easily. That’s a big issue of kids with autism, wandering away and getting lost.”

There will be face painting, a rock climbing wall, refreshments, music and a one-mile walk. The event is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at Coxhall Gardens, 2000 W. 116th St. It is the seventh year the walk will be held at Coxhall Gardens. Previously it was held in Lawrence  but it outgrew the venue. The walk is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly. Other than service animals, no pets are allowed.

Cost is $10 to register and $50 of donations or fundraising for a T-shirt.
