City Court Judge Gregory L. (Greg) Caldwell died Oct. 13.

Born to O.W. and Betty (Hiatt) Caldwell on March 11, 1942 in Elwood, Ind., Caldwell was 74 years old and had served as the judge of the Noblesville City Court since 1992.

Caldwell graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1950, from Indiana University with an AB in political science in 1964 and from the University Law School in Indianapolis with a J.D. in 1968, the same year he began practicing law in Tipton, Ind., where he was deputy prosecutor for three years.

In 1970, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Tipton Circuit Judge, falling 123 votes short after only two years practice in Tipton. He moved his office to Noblesville in 1972, and in addition to that private practice, worked as a part-time deputy prosecutor until 1977. Upon leaving the prosecutor’s office, he maintained a private practice in Noblesville focusing on criminal defense, family law and other areas of general practice. In 1991, he was elected to the part-time position of Noblesville City Judge and held that position until his untimely death.  He served six terms on the City Court Bench. Caldwell was Hamilton County resident since 1972.

During his 48 years of law practice, Caldwell had professional memberships in the American Bar Association, Hamilton County Bar Association, the Indiana City and Town Court Judges Association, Indiana State Bar Association, Tipton County Bar Association and Indiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also was a charter member and past president of the Noblesville Sunrisers Kiwanis Club and was a Kiwanian since 1968. He also belonged to the Tipton Elks Lodge, Noblesville Elks Lodge, Noblesville Eagles and the Fox Prairie Men’s Golf Club, as well as various local Republican organizations. Caldwell was elected on multiple occasions to the position of precinct committeeman and delegate to the Indiana State Republican Convention. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, sport-shooting enthusiast, old-west firearms collector and golfer.

Caldwell is survived by son Trent Caldwell and his wife Theresa, of Noblesville, son Travis and his wife Rebecca, and their daughter Lucy and son Dane of Denver, Colo., four siblings Kim (Vicki) of Kokomo, Ind., Monty (Madlyn) of Charlestown, Ind., Amy (Jerry) Hoffman of Richmond, Ind., and Brian (Susan) of Kokomo, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held at Fox Prairie Golf Course Oct. 24. Donations may be made to Noblesville Sunrisers Kiwanis or The Greg Caldwell Memorial Junior Golf Fund.
