Police find suicidal man at Union Elementary

Union Elementary was on lockdown after school Oct. 13 as police searched for a suicidal man reported to have a gun in the area.

Carmel police contacted Boone County officials after the wife of a 34-year-old Carmel man reported that he was suicidal and left the home with a rifle at approximately 5 p.m. Police found his car at Union Elementary, where some students were still inside for an afterschool program.

Police established a perimeter around the school and began searching for the man. They found him at a sheltered area on the playground, and he began walking toward officers as they approached. He complied with the officers’ verbal commands, was searched and found to be without a weapon.

The man told police he dumped a rifle at a driving range north of the school. An officer located the .22 caliber rifle, unloaded, in a dumpster at 2301 S US 421 in Zionsville.

The man was transported to Community North Hospital for evaluation.
