Board member elected – Zionsville resident J. Scott Davison has been elected to the board of directors of The American Council of Life Insurers. Davison is president and CEO of OneAmerica.

Veterans to be honored – Salem United Methodist Church of Zionsville, 6701 S. 775 E., will honor military veterans Nov. 13 at the 9:15 a.m. worship service. Special music will be performed and all veterans in attendance will be recognized. Salem identifies veterans as anyone who has worn a military uniform to serve and protect the U.S. here and/or abroad.

Nonprofit grants available – The LIDS Foundation is seeking youth-based nonprofits to apply for its 2017 Tip of the Hat Award national grant program. Exemplary nonprofit programs focused on sports-related activities, the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, or leadership and growth opportunities are eligible and invited to apply for one of five grants totaling $300,000 by the Nov. 13 deadline. Police Department hiring – The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Dept. is seeking community-minded men and women who would like to begin or continue a challenging and rewarding career in public service. Library programs – Dino-Mite Movie – The Good Dinosaur, 10:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 5 for ages 3 to 12 years old. Event will include movie screening with lemonade and popcorn. Bring a cup with a lid. Nature Center programs – Bat Encounters, 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at Zionsville Town Hall Community Room. See some of the largest and rarest bats in the world.

Leaf collection – The Town of Zionsville’s Street & Stormwater Dept. will provide curbside leaf collection from now through Dec. 2. Residents should rake leaves into long, narrow piles along the curb. No sticks or other yard rubbish should be in the piles. Cars should park off street if possible. The leaf vacuum will visit each neighborhood weekly as schedules allow.

Coat drive – Local orthodontist David Judy, DDS, MS, and the Judy Orthodontics Team are sponsoring Warm Up for Winter through Nov. 30. Donations of new or gently used winter wear such as coats, hats, gloves and scarves can be dropped off at the Judy Orthodontics office at 3965 W. 106th St., Suite 150. Donations will benefit the Julian Center.

EMT training classes – Boone County EMS Education, in cooperation with Witham Health Services, is presenting an EMT-Basic training class beginning Nov. 10. The class will consist of 39 sessions, held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m. The cost is $650, which includes a $200 non-refundable deposit due upon enrollment. Peace, Wine, Glasses Frame Show – Visionelle Eyecare, 6618 Whitestown Pkwy., presents Peace, Wine, Glasses Frame Show featuring Tom Ford, from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 4. Purchase any Tom Ford frames and receive special discounts. Also available will be wine tasting, massages, reflexology, live music, giveaways and more.

Readers needed – The United Way is seeking volunteer readers for its ReadUP program. Volunteers read to small groups of children ages 3 to 5 years old to give them a consistent opportunity to connect with caring adults in a structured setting. Little League board members needed – Zionsville Little League serves 800-plus kids every year with our spring and fall rec programs, Showcase and All-Stars. The board of directors has some unfilled seats, one of which is critical to its operations. Miss Indiana crowned – The 2017 Miss Indiana USA and Miss Teen Indiana USA were recently crowned at the Palladium. Brittany Winchester of Indianapolis was named Miss Indiana USA. Indianapolis resident Paige Robinson was crowned Miss Teen Indiana USA.

Early voting – Early voting is available for all registered voters at Zionsville Town Hall and Zionsville Presbyterian Church. Early voting dates and times are Nov. 2-4 from 1 to 8 p.m. and Nov. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Straight ticket voting changes – Straight party voting has changed in Indiana. Hoosiers will still be able to cast a straight ticket on Nov. 8, but that vote will not count for any individual candidate for county council or town council at-large. Voters now need to select each candidate they wish to elect for at-large county council and town council seats.

Beauty Lounge trunk show – The Beauty Lounge, 2325 Pointe Pkwy, Suite 110, is hosting a trunk show from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 featuring items for purchase and artwork from local artists. Items will be featured from Robert Goodman Jewelers and Chan Luu, a Los Angeles-based contemporary lifestyle brand offering handcrafted designer jewelry, scarves and apparel. Rascia’s Creative Cakes will provide light desserts.

Zionsville basketball – Learn about the history of Zionsville basketball from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. Local writer and historian Kermit Paddack will talk about the proud history of basketball in Zionsville. Copies of his books will be available for signing and purchase. Scholarships available – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Program offers students the opportunity to apply for one of four scholarships honoring the applicant’s heritage to celebrate the growing diversity in Indiana. Applications are being accepted from eligible high school seniors in one of four ethnic categories: Asian, Hispanic, African-American and all others. Applications are due by Jan. 18, 2017.
