Students compete at conference – The ZCHS Chapter of Business Professionals of America competed at the 2017 BPA Regional Leadership Conference this month. The students placed in 38 different events, resulting in 49 of the 96 students meeting qualification guidelines for the State Leadership Conference in March. Of this number, they had 15 individual region champions and three team region champions, in addition to 14 runner-up individuals and one runner-up team.
Food drive a success – David Weekley Homes hosted its second annual Thanksgiving Drive, collecting an aggregate of 147,000 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 20 participating markets. The company’s efforts provided more than 149,000 meals to local families. Indianapolis team members delivered the items to Second Helpings, Inc. to distribute to families in time for the holiday. In addition, Second Helpings, Inc. received a $6,000 donation from the David Weekley Family Foundation.
Player of the Week – Zionsville resident Will Dixon of Trine University has been named a MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced. This is Dixon’s first Player of the Week honor this season and the fifth of his career.
Lego building contest – Earth Explorer Toys presents the annual Lego Building Contest running from Jan. 14-21. The theme is Indiana Landmarks. This theme goes along with the Indiana history curriculum taught in the schools and can include any structure or locale that has an Indiana history. AED’s donated – On Dec. 12, Bolt For The Heart (BFTH) Foundation continued to deliver on the promise to equip Indiana State Police patrol vehicles with lifesaving Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) by presenting a gift of 95 AED’s. This was in addition to the more than 50 AED’s presented to ISP in March of this year. To date, 215 AED’s have been gifted to the Indiana State Police from the BFTH foundation.
Nature Center programs – Creature Feature, 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 29. Stop in anytime for a chance to meet some of our educational animals up-close. What a great way to ask questions and discover what makes these animals so amazing.
License branch holiday hours – All BMV license branches will be closed from Dec. 31 through Jan. 2 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. All branches resume normal hours of operation Jan. 3.
Schaibley named to committees – State Rep. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) will serve on the House Committee on Insurance. She also was named to the House Committee on Financial Institutions, the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code and the House Statutory Committee on Interstate and International Cooperation.

Restoration award nominations – Indiana Landmarks seeks nominations for the annual Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration. The prize goes to the owner of a historic structure that has been restored following the highest standards in method, materials and design. Eligible owners include individuals, companies, nonprofit organizations, institutions and government entities. Anyone may submit a nomination—the owner, architect, engineer, contractor, neighbor, appreciative citizen. Nomination forms are available at bit.ly/ILawards. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 23.
Brooks named co-chair – Congresswoman Susan Brooks (R-IN), along with Congresswoman Lois Frankel (D-FL), have been elected by the women of the House as co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues for the 115th Congress. The Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues has been a leading advocate on issues advancing the lives of women and families. Caucus members have helped pass legislation securing tougher child support enforcement, promoting women’s health, helping women business owners and protecting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Winter reading program – The adult winter reading program is underway at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. Stop by the reference desk to sign up and receive a Challenge Sheet, a free book and a piece of candy. Boone REMC director positions available – At the Boone REMC 2017 annual meeting, to be held March 4, Boone REMC members will elect one director per district to represent districts 1, 2, and 3. Boone REMC members who are interested in a position may obtain the required petition forms by calling the office at 800-897-7362 or stopping by the office, 1207 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon. Petitions must be signed by no less than 3 percent of the membership in the district for which a candidate is seeking election and must be received in the co-op’s office by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 3.
Boone REMC page days – This winter, high school students from across the state will have the opportunity to participate in one of three Page Days hosted by Indiana electric cooperatives. High school students whose households receive electricity from Boone REMC are eligible to participate. Scholarships available – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Program offers students the opportunity to apply for one of four scholarships honoring the applicant’s heritage to celebrate the growing diversity in Indiana. Applications are being accepted from eligible high school seniors in one of four ethnic categories: Asian, Hispanic, African-American and all others. Applications are due by Jan. 18. Meeting dates – The Boone County Solid Waste Management District Board meeting dates for 2017 have been announced. All meetings begin at 8:30 a.m. and are held at the County Annex Building, 116 W. Washington St., Room 105, Lebanon. The meeting dates are Jan. 19, March 16, May 18, July 20, Sept. 21 and Nov. 16.
Scholarships available – Boone REMC will award five $500 scholarships to students who are dependents or legal wards of Boone REMC members. To be eligible, students must attend a post-secondary educational institution full time during the 2017-18 academic year. To apply, students need to fill out a basic contact information form, read a short history of Boone REMC and complete a 15-question, multiple-choice quiz.
