Column: Turning a standard basement into a collector’s oasis

I’ve recently had the pleasure of helping long time clients turn their standard basement into a collector’s oasis. The planning process took some time, as the husband wanted something very Art Deco with lots of gold accents and shiny surfaces. However, when he revealed his storage room filled with antiques and tons of collectibles, I encouraged them to transform their basement into a living space that spoke of a more transitional flavor.  (Which is something that the wife had wanted all along).  Walls were torn down and a brick and stone combination was applied to all existing walls.  And, wow!  The old scoreboard and updated gooseneck lighting speak very powerfully against their new backdrop.  A brushed marble countertop separates the theatre room from the common space.  Newly chosen fixtures shine proudly from their assigned places. Multiple sitting areas were created….a chattery of swivel chairs in front of a new fireplace, counter stools at the theatre counter, bar stools at the ‘speak easy’ bar area, and a not-so-old-fashioned booth.

A key ingredient to the project was the general contractor, Clymer Build. Gary Clymer brought all plans to life with newly stained kitchen cabinets & trim, new wood floors and a huge built in lighted cabinet that has multiple display shelves that houses the many treasured Matchbox cars and model trains.  Overall, there are a few Art Deco items that please the eye, but the theme is definitely a mix between industrial and transitional.
