Three motorists were injured in a crash involving four vehicles on 146th Street at Hazel Dell Road on the evening of May 23.

Deputies were dispatched on a report of a crash with serious injury at approximately 7:23 p.m. Initial callers reported an unconscious male and a motorcyclist pinned between two vehicles on 146th Street.

According to the initial report, investigators believe Jason R. Smith, 42, Noblesville, driving a black 2013 Land Rover, was eastbound on 146th Street at Hazel Dell Road when he rear-ended Joshua A. Bartock, 29, Noblesville, who was riding an orange, 2007 Suzuki motorcycle. The impact of the collision ejected Bartock and the Land Rover continued, hitting the back of a black 2017 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Scott Sampson, 42, Noblesville. The Pacifica was then pushed into a fourth vehicle, a gray 2014 Land Rover, driven by Paul Rothwell, 46, Zionsville, which was stopped in eastbound traffic.

The ejection of Bartock from his motorcycle caused him to become pinned between two of the vehicles and the bike was wedged underneath. First responders said Bartock had severe injuries to his lower extremities and was taken to St.Vincent Hospital on 86th Street. Injuries to others involved were listed as incapacitating with complaints of pain and bleeding.

Investigators are working to determine if a medical issue prior to the incident may have led to the crash. As with all fatal and serious bodily injury crashes, toxicology tests were taken on those involved. Tests results are pending at this time.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team continues to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact deputies at 317-773-1282.
