The May Teacher of the Month winner is Deidra Smith, a second-grade teacher at Stonegate Elementary. Student Ava Caudill nominated her. As a reward, Ava won a pizza party for the class, and Smith won a $50 Visa gift card from sponsor Edge Guys presented by marketing director Vicki Burdick.

Here is Ava’s winning essay:

Mrs. Smith deserves to win because she is a great teacher and she treats us like her own kids. She is nice, sweet, kind, calm, and rarely ever yells. She is also a great person outside of school. She volunteers for a lot of things but one of them is Safe Families through her church. She has kids live with her whose parents can’t take care of them, and sometimes they even go to our school and we meet them. We also have class Dojo, and she finds us doing great things and gives us points to win prizes.
