Authors announced – Six authors have been announced to speak at the annual Guilded Leaf Book & Author Luncheon set for 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19. They are Ben Blum, Laura Martin, Janet Peery, PeterHernon, Danya Kukafka and Amy Stewart. They will also appear at Writers at the Pavilion from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 18. Community Pillar Award nominations – Legacy Fund has announced the debut of the Community Pillar Awards to honor individuals or corporations working to solve pressing challenges and create a brighter future for Hamilton County residents in three leadership areas—College Readiness and Success, Family Success, and Inspiring Places. Mattress sale – If you are in the market for a new mattress, you can support the arts and get a great price on a mattress at the same time. The Carmel High School Band program is hosting a mattress sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 30 at Carmel High School. Brand new, name brand mattresses with full warranties as well as accessories are featured. Delivery and financing is available. A portion of every purchase goes to help support the band.

Ice skating competition – The Ice Skating Club of Indianapolis will host the 25th anniversary of the Tony Todd Memorial Carmel Invitational July 28 to 30 at the Carmel Ice Skadium, 1040 Third Ave. SW. Skaters range in age from 4 to 18 years old, and they will participate in free skate, showcase and national solo dance competitions. College news – Carmel resident Laura Weiss recently graduated from the University of Akron.

EAA Academy – Andrew Bettner of Carmel has been accepted to the Experimental Aircraft Association Air Academy to be held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Academy activities include flight experience, workshops, and classroom study.

Blondin scholarship awarded – Ryan Woock of Carmel has been awarded the Nancy Blondin Scholarship. The scholarship was started in 2000 to honor the late Nancy Blondin, who was president of the Carmel Chamber from 1986 to 2000. The $4,000 award, given as $1,000 each year for four years, is available exclusively to children of employees whose companies are OneZone members.

Sims attends program in Boston – Avery Sims, a Carmel High School senior, attended a three-day honors program in Boston for students interested in entering the medical field. Sims is a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders, which was held June 25-27. The event was an opportunity to hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading medical research, receive advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans, hear stories from patients who are living medical miracles and learn about advances in medicine and medical technologies.

Boys Nation senator named – Carmel High School student Dalton Thompson has been selected to participate as a senator in The American Legion’s Boys Nation Program, taking place July 21-28 in the Washington, D.C. area. Boys Nation is an annual program that includes civic training, leadership development, and a focus on Americanism. Two representatives from each of the 49 Boys States represent their state at Boys Nation in Washington, where the young leaders receive an education on the structure and function of federal government.

Food pantry collections – AlphaGraphics has partnered with Carmel United Methodist Food Pantry to stock its shelves with personal care items. From now through September, donations of personal care items can be dropped off at AlphaGraphics, 1051 3rd Ave SW during normal business hours. Items that are needed include: shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, tampons and any other toiletries.

Creative writing contest – The Library Foundation Guild is sponsoring a creative writing contest for students in grades 9-12. Short stories, poems, essays and plays are all accepted. First and second place winners will receive Barnes & Noble gift cards and tickets to the Guilded Leaf Book & Author Luncheon on Oct. 19. Archery championships – The U.S. Archery championships are coming to Westfield this summer. More than 1,000 archers will gather at Grand Park Sports Campus Aug. 2-6 to compete in events that include Junior Olympic Archery Development and the National Target Championships. Competitors will include Olympians, world champions and youth athletes. For more information, visit www.USArchery.org.

Adults only waterpark events – The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center will host Monon Mixer from 8 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 3. The event costs $10 per person and includes adults-only access to all The Waterpark’s features including the lazy river, adventure slides and FlowRider. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase from Bier Brewery, Sun King Brewery and Mallow Run Winery, in addition to concessions. Native Habitat tours – St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 3106 E. Carmel Dr., invites you to tour our Native Habitat and Rain Garden on the church grounds with naturalist guides this summer at 7 p.m. Aug. 9. The tour is open to church members and the general public.

Free seminars for seniors – CarDon & Associates is partnering with Indy Mature Living to help educate Indianapolis-area seniors about issues related to home ownership and post-retirement downsizing. The free seminars will highlight senior living options for those over the age of 55, downsizing, and other educational topics. Upcoming topics include: Tax, Financial, and Legal Issues from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Altenheim, 3525 E. Arts and education grants available – The Telamon Foundation, the charitable arm of Telamon Corporation, has announced that its grant application for 2017 is now available. This marks the Telamon Foundation’s fourth annual round of grants that focus primarily on the Foundation’s pillars of arts and education. Mainstreet makes donation – Mainstreet donated $2,500 to the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank through the Mainstreet Living Generously grant. The grant will benefit summer lunch programs throughout the county. The Carmel-based company also provided more than 264 pounds of food for the Summer Lunch programs through a company-wide food drive in June.

Kalavsky to lead training – F.C. Tucker Company has named Christy Kalavsky as director of training. Kalavsky will lead F.C. Tucker’s comprehensive agent training program that includes tracks in sales, personal development, technology and coaching opportunities.

New ownership for spa – Carmel City Center’s Silver Door Boutique Spa is under new ownership and will maintain the same quality service and unique experience its clients have come to expect. Experienced in the spa industry, the spa’s new owner, Jessica Garcia, has been with Silver Door Spa for over three years as an esthetician and brings with her ten years of overall experience in the industry.

New physician joins practice – Midwest Fertility Specialists welcomes reproductive endocrinologist Erica Anspach Will, M.D., as the newest physician to the practice. Dr. Anspach Will is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
