Noblesville East Middle School eighth-grader Connor Meinerding plants milkweed. Last month, Noblesville East Middle School science teacher Rick Towle and his students teamed with Endangered Species Coalition volunteer Jeff Waggoner to plant milkweed at Noblesville Schools’ outdoor education center, Chinquapin Ridge at Mallery Woods. The milkweed planting was done in an effort to help save local monarch butterfly populations, which have decreased by 90 percent in the past 20 years. Milkweeds, which also are in decline, are essential for monarch survival. (Submitted photos) Science teacher Rick Towle with NEMS students and Endangered Species Coalition volunteer Jeff Waggoner.
