Pastor Jerry Zehr, president of the Carmel Interfaith Alliance, hosted a pre-Thanksgiving service Nov. 19 at Carmel Christian Church where members of various faiths offered prayers, sang songs and advocated for peace.

U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks was in attendance, along with Carmel City councilors Laura Campbell and Bruce Kimball. During the event, the Interfaith Alliance honored Dr. Shahid Athar, a Carmel resident, for his years of service, giving him the Interfaith Ambassador of the Year Award.

“As a physician, I know that when you remove the skin, our blood is the same color,” Athar said. “Our bones are the same color. Our muscle tissue is the same color and our nerve fibers are the same color. Inside, we are the same.”

The event featured a variety of religious leaders, including Cantor Melissa Cohen from Congregation Beth-El Zedeck, Rabbi Stanley Halpern from Congregation Beth Shalom, Rev. Bill Bartz from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Hera Ashraf from Al Salam Foundation, Rabbi Dennis Sasso from Congregation Beth-El Zedeck and K.P. Singh, a leader in the Sikh community.
