At its July 9 meeting, the Westfield City Council heard an introduction to the Cottages on East planned unit development, a proposal to add four cottage-style homes at the northwest corner of East Street and North Street

Sam Milligan of Northridge Construction presented to the council. Northridge Construction has maintained the property as a rental by James Management Group.

“In that time, we have had a lot of people approach us looking for a different, smaller-footprint, lower-priced home in the downtown Westfield area,” Milligan said. “This certainly creates that opportunity. The fit and finish of these homes will be very similar with what we’ve built already in downtown Westfield.”

Milligan said he spoke to the neighbor immediately to the west and said the neighbor had no concerns. A neighborhood meeting will be held in the future, and Milligan will speak to the Grand Junction Task Group July 17. He expects a favorable response.

A common drive constructed off North Street will provide common access to the homes, which will have rear-load garages.

Northridge Construction will set the homes back off of East Street to grant a 30-foot right-of-way easement to accommodate any future expansion to East Street.

“Our overall goal for the project is to continue to create high-quality residential options for a broader range of clients who are interested in living in the downtown area,” Milligan said. “Our overall goal is to continue to revitalize residential development in downtown Westfield.”

Because it was only an introduction, the council didn’t vote on the proposal. However, Council President Jim Ake lauded Milligan and his team.

“I think you’ve been very successful in helping redevelop the area, and I know the owners of your homes are very pleased with the results,” Ake said.

The next Westfield City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 23 at City Hall, 130 Penn St. For more or to view the agenda, visit westfield.in.gov.
