Lt. Joe Bickel, public information officer for the Carmel Police Dept., said the event is a way to promote safety in Carmel and share information with the community and display some of the resources used to protect it.

“(National Night Out is) to bring everyone together with law enforcement, to create a sense of security,” Bickel said.

Carmel has celebrated National Night Out for more than 10 years, and the event attracts more  people each year.

“Every year it grows as the word gets out. (Everyone) has a great time meeting police and (firefighters) and chatting about things,” Bickel said. “A lot of times you don’t get the opportunity to sit down and talk to a policeman or fireman like this.”

Bickell said his favorite part of National Night Out is talking to Carmel residents and letting them know about law enforcement’s efforts in the partnership to fight crime.

“It’s a time for the community to interact with public safety and enhance the relationship with the community and police and fire,” he said.
