The Fishers Parks and Recreation Dept. is hosting a new event that families can attend Sept. 9.

Grandparent’s Day coincides with National Grandparent’s Day and will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. at Saxony Hall and Beach, 13362 Pennington Rd. This is the first year Fishers Parks and Recreation is featuring the event.

“We have a large, vibrant older adult community in Fishers that we would like to be more engaged with,” Parks Director Sarah Sandquist said. “We’ve heard feedback from the community that we can do more and there’s opportunities for engagement. This is one of the first things we are doing to expand our offerings.”

During the event, grandparents and grandkids can fish without a fishing license.

“We are partnering with the Dept. of Natural Resources on a free fishing day,” Sandquist said. “They offer a few throughout the year.”

Crafts, a tea party and other activities also will be available. The event is $8 per person and registration is required by Sept. 6. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Sandquist said the event has an open-house feel, and grandparents can come to the event with their grandkids throughout the three-hour time frame.

“National days of recognition have been an easy way for us to celebrate and offer opportunities for the community to recreate,” Sandquist said.
