Carmel man to swim Tampa Bay – Bob Spearman of Carmel will swim across Tampa Bay Jan. 13 as part of the 2019 Tampa Bay Frogman Swim, a 5K swim to benefit the US Navy SEAL Foundation. He has participated in various marathons and triathlons, but he’s never attempted a swim of this distance, especially in the cold, open water of Tampa Bay in January. College news – Kathryn Hettiger of Carmel is among students named to Augustana College’s 2018 fall term Dean’s List. Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences.
Holiday light recycling – All Carmel Clay schools and White’s Ace Hardware are collecting broken or inefficient strands of holiday lights through Jan. 10. The program is organized by Green Teams at Carmel schools and Carmel Utilities.
Master Gardeners offer intern class – The Purdue Master Gardener Program will offer its basic intern training beginning Jan. 14. Training will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays with two Wednesday dates at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2003 Pleasant St., Noblesville. Participants will be introduced to subjects like soil science, plant science, plant problems, using pesticides safely and more. The cost is $175 per participant for materials and class time. Ladies tea – Fellowship in Christ Church, 310 N. Range Line Rd., will host Coffee, Tea, and Thee for ladies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. This is open to all women in the community and there is no cost to attend.
Special exhibit – The Museum of Miniature Houses presents the Founders’ Exhibit, celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary. Houses and room boxes made by the co-founders will be on display, as well as historical artifacts of how Main Street looked 25 years ago, handwritten financial ledgers from the museum’s first years, and more. Exhibit runs through Jan. 6, 2019.
Reserve skating times online – The City of Carmel has unveiled a new online ticketing service to make it easier to reserve time and ice skates for the upcoming holiday and winter seasons of skating at the Ice at Center Green. The new website utilizes a program called Ticket Spice and is an online ticket purchasing portal that will enable visitors to guarantee their spot on the ice by purchasing tickets and reserving skates in advance. Engineering opportunities for students – INDOT is offering civil engineering students scholarships and paid employment during summer breaks and upon graduation. Students must be accepted or enrolled full time in one of Indiana’s certified civil engineering schools and apply using the form at INDOTScholarship.IN.gov. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 31.
Youth Leadership program open – United Way of Central Indiana is accepting applications for the 2019 Youth Leadership United Program. This program teaches high school students about the nonprofit sector and how to serve on a nonprofit board. David Weekley Homes gives back – David Weekley Homes recently held its fourth annual Giving Thanks, Giving Back Thanksgiving Drive. The drive was from Nov. 1 to 15, and David Weekley Homes collected more than 184,000 pounds of turkey and nonperishable items in 18 participating markets. The company’s efforts provided nearly 311,500 meals to local families. In Indianapolis, more than 1,100 pounds of nonperishable items were collected.

SEP CEO to retire – Jeff Gilbert has announced that he will retire as CEO of Carmel-based software product design and development company SEP March 31, 2019. He will be replaced by SEP President Raman Ohri. Gilbert helped launch the company with three colleagues in 1988. Learn more at sep.com.
Tom Wood hosts Toy Drive – The Tom Wood Automotive Group Toy Drive is happening through Dec. 12, benefitting Avondale Meadows YMCA. The YMCA aims to give two to three toys to every child, ages 0 to 15. New, unwrapped toys or monetary donations can be dropped off at Tom Wood, 4620 E. 96th Street in Indianapolis.
New hire –Denise Moe of Carmel has been hired as a utility coordinator supporting road and bridge design for GAI Consultant’s Midwest Infrastructure group in its new Hamilton County office. As a utility coordinator, Moe’s responsibilities include identifying, coordinating, mitigating, and/or relocating utility facilities that are impacted by highway improvement projects throughout Indiana.
Mercantile now open – nine + roxy opened Dec. 8 in Carmel City Center at 751 Hanover Place. A modern artisan mercantile, this will be the first brick and mortar store for nine + roxy. Items found at the shop include small batch, uniquely procured goods such as home and lifestyle items including accessories, art and jewelry. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays.

Donate used smartphones – TCC Gives, a Carmel-based nonprofit that provides programs, resources and grant opportunities to improve communities, recently donated more than 500 smartphones to help victims of domestic and sexual violence stay connected to loved ones through its More Than a Phone program, which provides smartphones along with data, text and talk services for four months to domestic violence survivors.
