A former swim coach at Carmel High School and Carmel Swim Club was sentenced Jan. 30 to more than 16 years in federal prison after he admitted to sexually exploiting a student.

According to prosecutors, John Goelz, 30, built trust with the minor victim from at least September 2017 through June 2018 and enticed her to engage in sexual acts at his home, community parks and motels.

Federal investigators found videos and photos on Goelz’s cellphone that showed Goelz and the victim engaging in a sexual activity in an Anderson motel room on June 30, 2018.

Goelz must serve 10 years of supervised release following his prison sentence.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations and the Hamilton County Metro Child Exploitation Task Force partnered on the case.
