Zionsville Community Schools isn’t the only organization in Boone County seeing an increase in numbers due to community growth. The Boone County Boys & Girls Club has seen a steady climb in children utilizing the facility for the past several years.

“This year was an increase not only in the growth of the number of members but also in the fact that we merged two Boys & Girls Clubs together in 2018,” said Tim Fretz, CEO. “The Lebanon Club and Zionsville’s two clubs came together and created the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County, Lebanon, Whitestown and Zionsville Units. The three units combined served 3,001 members in 2018, with an average daily attendance of 425 every day after school.”

Fretz said an increase in after-school attendance was impacted by ZCS shifting the school day earlier for elementary students.

“With the shift in start times, the elementary students are released from school before the middle and high schools,” he said. “In the past, older siblings acted as the after-school caregiver, or the parent was able to be home to meet them off the bus when the school release was later in the afternoon.”

For the moment, Fretz said space isn’t an issue.

“We have expanded our programming space at the Whitestown Unit this last fall and still have some capacity to grow with our daily attendance at all three units,” he said. “Capacity is part of strategic planning as we develop the future footprint of our organization. Our basketball program has also grown to meet our capacity with gym space with 48 teams for this winter session.”
