A 17-year-old Carmel Learning Center student was arrested March 26 after police found him with a handgun.

Officers took the student into custody without incident and transported him to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. He has been charged with possession of firearms on school property (level 6 felony); theft, receiving stolen property (level 6 felony); and carrying a handgun without a license (A-misdemeanor).

School officials learned about the firearm after receiving a tip that a student had a loaded handgun on campus.

“We are thankful for the person who quickly notified administration and the swift action taken by school personnel and Carmel police to keep our students safe,” Carmel Clay Schools Supt. Michael Beresford stated in an email to parents.

The student told officials he had no intentions of harming anyone at the school.

The Carmel Learning Center, which offers an alternative learning environment, is south of Carmel High School at 515 E. Main St.
