Voter registration deadline – The deadline to register for the May 7 primary election is April 8. Hamilton County residents can register online, by mail or in person. Early voting begins April 9 at the Judicial Voting Center, 1 Hamilton County Square, Noblesville.  Learn more at hamiltoncounty.in.gov/222/Current-Election-Information.

Student brings loaded gun to campus – A 17-year-old Carmel Learning Center student was arrested March 26 after police found him with a loaded handgun on campus. The student has been charged with possession of firearms on school property; theft, receiving stolen property; and carrying a handgun without a license. The student told officials he had no intentions of harming anyone at the school.

Trent memorial gate – Purdue University President Mitch Daniels announced March 27 that a memorial gate leading to the student-section entrance of Ross-Ade Stadium will be erected in honor of Tyler Trent, the Purdue graduate and superfan who died Jan. 1 of cancer. Daniels also announced Sean P. English, a freshman in exploratory studies from Northville, Mich., as the first recipient of the Tyler Trent Courage and Resilience Award, a memorial scholarship in Trent’s name funded through a combination of gifts.

FBI class graduate – Carmel Police Dept. Lt. James Semester graduated from the 275th FBI National Academy Class in Quantico, Va. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement managers/leaders nominated by their agency heads because of demonstrated leadership qualities. The 10-week program provides undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science.

CCPR promotion – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation has named Eric Mehl recreation and facilities director. Mehl has worked with CCPR for nine years and most recently served as the Monon Community Center assistant director. Mehl’s responsibilities include logistics and operations throughout the park system.

Senate intern – Reed Davis of Carmel is serving as an intern for the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus during the 2019 legislative session. Davis is the son of Richard and Mary Anne Davis. He graduated from Carmel High School and is a recent graduate of Indiana University, where he received a degree in political science and criminal justice. As a legislative intern, Davis tracks and analyzes bill data, provides constituent services, staffs Senate committee hearings and meetings, and conducts legislative policy research.

Bond bank makes appointment – Jimmy Dulin has been appointed to the Carmel Local Public Improvement Bond Bank. Dulin is the owner of a RE/MAX real estate brokerage and is involved with many related business ventures that assist RE/MAX agents in their development and growth. He holds several real estate certifications and has received a number of awards.

Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 6:30 p.m. April 10 to hear from Mac Wyckoff, an Oregon resident who will speak on “Crisis in Charleston Harbor, the Bombardment of Ft. Sumter.” The program is free and open to the public. It will be held at Carmel City Hall, 1 Civic Square.

Mulch sale – The Forest Dale PTO mulch sale features varieties from Musselman Farms with no sales tax and free delivery within Carmel, Fishers, Westfield and Noblesville. Deliveries will take place April 17 and 18. Place orders at https://fde.formstack.com/forms/2019_mulch_sale.

Board Break-A-Thon – Master Yoo’s World Class Tae Kwon Do will hold the sixth annual Board Break-A-Thon from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 20 at Carmel High School, 520 E. Golden Hoosier Award – Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Golden Hoosier award. The award honors Hoosier senior citizens for their lifetime of service and commitment to their communities. To be eligible, nominees must be an Indiana resident, age 65 or older and have been a volunteer in the community for the past three years. The deadline for submitting applications is April 29. Gardening help – The Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District has resources available to help with gardening questions and issues. As part of its Urban Agriculture program, SWCD staff members are available for free site visits to any backyard and community vegetable garden in Hamilton County. Staff can provide guidance with planning, advice on weed and pest management, soil health information, yield increase through conservation, tip sheets and more. Ladies tea – Fellowship in Christ Church, 310 N. Range Line Rd., will host Coffee, Tea, and Thee for ladies from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. This is open to all women in the community and there is no cost to attend.

Dodgeball fundraiser – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Shop for Kids Dodge, Duck and Dip Dodgeball Challenge is set for April 27 at Hamilton Heights High School, 25802 State Rte 19 in Arcadia. The double-elimination tournament will serve as a fundraiser for the Shop for Kids program, which provides $200 shopping trips during the holidays for less-fortunate children in Hamilton County. Angels & Doves event – Angels & Doves will present a night of fun to help stop bullying in schools beginning at 7 p.m. April 27 at Danny Boy Beer Brewery & Whiskey Distillery, 12702 Meeting House Rd. in Carmel. The event will include beer and whiskey tastings, food samplings, a professional comedian, live music, silent auction and more. Tickets cost $75 for an individual or $100 for a couple. Race to benefit cancer research – This year, the Challenge 5K Walk Run will benefit the Tyler Trent Cancer Researach Endowment. Trent, a Carmel resident, was the first student to serve on the Director’s Advisory Board for the Purdue Center for Cancer Research. Creative writers meetings – Carmel Creative Writers wants to give writers of all levels and genres the opportunity to network, learn and share. Join us for our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Hoosier Salon, 22 N. Range Line Rd. Scholarships offered – Tru Direction, Inc. will award scholarships of $500 to $2,500 per qualified applicant (maximum $10,000 per calendar year) as determined by the scholarship committee. Scholarships may be used for any related expenses for college, university, trade school or technical school.  Applicants must be attending school a minimum of 9 hours, or the equivalent, per semester, however, preference is given to those attending at least 12 hours. Senate intern – Sydney Kadinger of Carmel is serving as an intern for the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus during the 2019 legislative session. She is the daughter of Scott Kadinger and Kim Puma. She graduated from Carmel High School and is a senior studying political science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. As a page intern, Kadinger leads workshops about Indiana’s state government for the Senate’s Page Program, which allows middle- and high-school students to spend a day at the Statehouse learning about the legislative process.

Best Buddies Friendship Walk – The Best Buddies Friendship Walk will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28 at Celebration Plaza at White River State Park, 801 W. Washington St., Indianapolis. The walk and celebration raise awareness and funds to support inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. February home sales – Homes in Carmel continue to sell faster and for more money. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Carmel in February 2019 was $402,598 at an average of $145.18 per square foot, an 18.1 percent price increase. Homes in the city sold 13 days faster than this time last year at 65 days.

Allstate gives back – Four local Allstate representatives recently earned $1,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands grants for area nonprofits. They include Carmel Allstate agency owner Ranj Puthran, who will support the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation; Carmel Allstate financial specialist Roy Lederman, who will support the Jefferson Awards for Public Service; and Patrick Terry, Sr., who will support Eagle Creek Little League.

Carmel attorney appointed – Carmel resident and Riley Bennett Egloff partner Kathleen Hart has been appointed to the board of directors of the Indiana Federal Community Defenders for a three-year term. IFCD’s mission is to provide high-quality, client-centered representation to indigent defendants charged with a federal crime and provide resources and training to Federal Criminal Justice Act panel attorneys.

Counties ranked by generosity – SmartAsset, a financial technology company, recently conducted a study on which Indiana counties donate the most money. The study measured how much people donate as a percentage of their net income and the number of people giving charitable donations in the county. Hamilton County ranked first. Boone County was second.
