The Carmel Police Dept. and Carmel Fire Dept. will collaborate again to enhance security and safety at CarmelFest.

“Because we’ve done it so many years in a row, we’ve kind of got it down to a science as far as what we need and where we need to have officers working,” CPD Lt. Joe Bickel said. “It comes together quite well and it’s a really neat event for everybody.”

The departments will manage a joint emergency operations center, which will remain open throughout the festival. Security plans have been prepared for any situation.

In addition, the CFD booth will feature virtual fire extinguisher demonstrations to educate guests. Kasey the Fire and Safety Dog with the Koorsen Kasey Program will greet guests July 3 at its booth.

“We’ll be able to talk about and provide general fire and EMS safety information, and the public will be able to see and look through the fire trucks,” CFD public information officer Keith Freer said.

While preparing for CarmelFest, CFD is in the process of fundraising to fully restore Engine 1, a 1960 Ford C850 firetruck that was retrieved from a salvage yard in June 2017.

The department wants to showcase the truck in the 2020 CarmelFest Parade as well as the Carmel Fire Buffs & Fire Dept. Museum.
