On Aug. 25, Hamilton County Tourism unveiled the 10-foot White River Monster sculpture, the subject of local lore. According to county historian David Heighway, in 1892, two men drove a wagon down Cicero Pike and claimed to have spotted a large animal in the river described as “a huge serpent 12 feet in length and perhaps 3 feet in circumference with a forked tail.” Later that month, four men found a carcass of a dead cow caught on branches in the river, which they figured to be the White River Monster. Heighway pauses by the monster sculpture, which is titled "William Herman Hamilton." Also known as "Willie," the sculpture will travel around the county this fall. (Photos by Anna Skinner)
