Editor’s note: The numbers listed in the ordinance only established a range for minimum, middle and maximum salaries. It did not set salaries. The 2.6 percent increase was only a reflection of a study examining cities of similar size and those salaries. The 2.6 percent was not the actual pay increase for each employee.

The Westfield City Council is set to vote on salaries of non-elected city employees.

Westfield Chief of Staff Todd Burtron introduced an ordinance during the council’s Sept. 23 meeting that would set salaries of city staff for the 2020 calendar year.

If approved, most positions would receive an approximate 2.6 percent pay increase.

“We do have what I believe is a very competitive benefits portfolio. I would argue that we’re not over-benefitted, and we’re not overpaid, but that remains a topic of debate in the community,” Burtron said. “This ordinance reflects a lot of thought and analysis with consideration to sustaining costs.”

The council will vote on the ordinance at its next meeting, 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at City Hall, 130 Penn St.
