Zionsville voters elect Democratic mayor in tight race

It appears Zionsville will soon have a new mayor.

With all Boone County precincts reporting but results not yet certified, Democratic candidate Emily Styron narrowly defeated incumbent Republican Tim Haak in the mayoral race. Styron received 50.55 percent of the vote to Haak’s 49.45 percent.

Boone County voters have rarely elected Democrats, and in every Zionsville town council race on the Nov. 5 ballot Republicans won by a solid margin.

“This is the first time in a long time (a Democrat has been elected in Boone County). I couldn’t tell you how long,” said Kristen Self, Styron’s campaign manager. “Probably in generations there hasn’t been a Democrat elected in Boone County.”

Self said the campaign worked hard throughout the day to get voters to the polls.

“We were canvassing doors, reminding people it was Election Day and trying to do everything we could,” Self said.

Voters also approved operational and construction referendums for Zionsville Community Schools.
