Westfield Washington Schools aquatic center zoning pending city council approval

For the past year and a half, Westfield Washington Schools has worked with YMCA to develop a new natatorium and aquatic center as the district experiences enrollment growth.

That growth has resulted in the schools’ need for more space. So, the district’s solution has been to build an off-site aquatic center in partnership with the YMCA, proposed on a 9-acre site at the southwest corner of 181st Street and Wheeler Road.

At its Nov. 18 meeting, the Westfield Advisory Plan Commission voted in favor of a zoning request from WWS that would allow the facility to be built. A public hearing was held prior to the vote, but no citizens spoke.

The aquatic center would house a state-of-the-art, 50-meter pool with 10 lanes, two bulkheads and a diving well. In May 2018, the school district entered into the agreement with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis that allows the district to house its aquatic center in the new facility, as well as a $15 million bond agreement. The lease agreement is set for 20 years, during which WWS will pay an annual rent of approximately $1.7 million.

The APC voted 6-0 to send a positive recommendation to the Westfield City Council on the rezone request, which will have final say.

If the project is approved, construction is expected to be complete in fall 2020.
