Battery suspect sought – Carmel police are seeking assistance in identifying a man who allegedly punched a fellow customer at Mellow Mushroom on E. 116th St. The man entered the restaurant at approximately 7:54 p.m. Jan. 19 to pick up an online order. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Carmel Police Dept. at 317-571-2500 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

Commissioner to retire – Bobby Cox, a Carmel resident and commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association since 2011, announced to the IHSAA executive committee his intention to retire effective Aug. 1. Cox, 63, joined the IHSAA as an assistant commissioner in 2000 and began his tenure as the IHSAA’s eighth commissioner on Feb. 1, 2011, succeeding Blake Ress (2000-11). The IHSAA personnel committee announced that a plan to begin the search for a new commissioner will be developed and presented to the IHSAA executive committee at its February meeting.

Golf championship – Carmel’s Crooked Stick Golf Club will play host to the Western Golf Association’s Western Amateur championship July 27 to Aug. 1. It will be the only WGA championship event in the series to be held outside of Illinois. Crooked Stick hosted the BMW Championship in 2012 and 2016. Proceeds from WGA championships will benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation as it provides full tuition and housing college scholarships to youth caddies with limited financial means. Kindergarten registration – Carmel Clay Schools’ kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year is under way through. Students must be at least 5 years old by Sept. 1 to start kindergarten in August. When registering children, parents/guardians will need an official birth certificate (not a hospital record) and proof of residency. Immunization records must be submitted to the school by the first day of instruction. Parents are encouraged to register students by March 6. Old Town Design Group scholarship –Old Town Design Group, based in Carmel, has established the Orchard Project Scholarship to provide tuition assistance to a Hamilton County student preparing for a career in the construction industry. For the 2020-21 school year, the Orchard Project will award two $2,500 scholarships. Hamilton County high school seniors or undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in a construction related program at an accredited college, university or technical school may apply. Magistrate bill advances – The House Courts and Criminal Code Committee recently approved State Rep. Donna Schaibley’s (R-Carmel) legislation opening up the opportunity for Hamilton County judges to appoint an additional magistrate. According to Schaibley, the new magistrate would work with local circuit and superior courts to handle minor offenses or hold preliminary hearings for more serious crimes. She said the most recent data from The Weighted Caseload Measure shows Hamilton County has one judicial officer for every 29,432 people. House Bill 1038 now moves to the House floor for further discussion.

Author visit – Author and former Meet The Press and NBC Nightly News director Jeffrey Blount will speak at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 55 4th Ave SE, at 2 p.m. Feb. 9. He is the author of “The Emancipation of Evan Walls,” a coming-of-age novel that explores race, class and identity within and outside the African American community. Heirbrandt re-elected VP – Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt was once again elected vice president of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners East Central District during its annual conference.  In his role, Heirbrandt will represent elected county commissioners in the East Central district of the state, which includes the following counties: Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Tipton, Union and Wayne.

Governor’s Fellowship – Applications will be accepted through Feb. 28 for the 2020-2021 Governor’s Fellowship, a highly selective experience in Indiana state government that places fellows in various state agencies on a rotating basis throughout the year. The program is open to college graduates who receive their bachelor’s degrees in either the fall 2019 or spring 2020. Writing competition – Senior living community The Stratford is accepting applicants for its annual Silver Pen Writing Competition. The competition will award three local high school seniors with scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. Merchants Bank expanding — Carmel-based Merchants Bank of Indiana unveiled plans to open a branch in Richmond as part of the company’s commitment to long-term growth. Seven Corners president – Carmel-based Seven Corners, Inc., a travel insurance and specialty benefits company, named Jeremy Murchland as president. Previously, Murchland was serving as senior vice president of sales and marketing. Prior to Seven Corners, Murchland served as vice president of business development for ALOM Technology as well as executive director of sales for Ingram Micro. Murchland received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Bellevue University.

Jiffy Lube honored for art – Jiffy Lube of Indiana recently received the Americans for the Arts’ national Arts and Business Partnership Award, one of only 10 U.S. companies honored and the first company in Indianapolis to receive this award. Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s “Every Part Matters” project started as a way to cover up graffiti at a local store and has progressed into partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis. In addition to supporting and hiring local artists, they’ve also created a new apprentice program that will give paid experience to emerging artists. Two of the murals are in Carmel.

Baker Hill hire – Carmel-based Baker Hill, a financial technology provider, has hired Todd Juracek as chief revenue officer. Juracek will assume responsibility for revenue-generation strategy and execution to maintain Baker Hill’s record growth from 2019. The company supports more than 20,000 bankers originating loans while managing more than $1.3 trillion in commercial loans for its client roster.

Firm hires chief innovation officer – Carmel-based Katz, Sapper & Miller, an accounting and consulting firm, has named Fady Qaddoura, former controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis, as its first chief innovation officer, effective Jan. 13.Qaddoura joins KSM after a decade in public service, first for the Indiana General Assembly, then the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development and Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, before being appointed the controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis by Mayor Joe Hogsett in 2016.

Merchants Bank hire – Carmel-based Merchants Bank of Indiana has hired Tony Holtzman as a Small Business Administration professional. Holtzman, a founding member of First Colorado National Bank, will hold the position of vice president of SBA Lending at the company’s Indianapolis office. Accounting firm grows – Katz, Sapper & Miller announced that Indianapolis-based Caskey & Daily, P.C. has joined the accounting and consulting firm. Caskey & Daily’s notable healthcare practice will enable KSM to expand its own healthcare practice, which serves as a provider of tax and accounting services, consulting, fair market value assessments, transactions, and valuations for the complete spectrum of healthcare organizations. Caskey & Daily will move to KSM’s Carmel office at 800 East 96th Street, Suite 500.

Hospice volunteers needed – Anew Hospice is recruiting volunteers to visit patients in facilities in Carmel, Noblesville and elsewhere in the Indianapolis area. Yoga training scholarship – Owners of The Hot Room, a hot yoga and hot Pilates studio, have created The Hot Room Leadership Institute Scholarship for People of Color. The full-tuition scholarship is open to any self-identified person of color who would like to deepen his or her yoga practice and gain skills to lead yoga classes. The scholarship will be available for each training hosted by The Hot Room Leadership Institute, a school for dedicated practitioners. Visitation policy – With the escalation of flu-like cases, Franciscan Health is has implemented a temporary visitation policy at its Carmel hospital. Only immediate family as identified by the patient or the patient’s designated representative will be allowed to visit. Visitors younger than 18 are not permitted unless they are seeking medical care or are the parents of pediatric patients (exceptions are made for postpartum visits).
