Kindergarten registration – Carmel Clay Schools’ kindergarten registration for the 2020-21 school year is under way through. Students must be at least 5 years old by Sept. 1 to start kindergarten in August. When registering children, parents/guardians will need an official birth certificate (not a hospital record) and proof of residency. Immunization records must be submitted to the school by the first day of instruction. Parents are encouraged to register students by March 6. Statehouse visit – Carmel resident Cooper Grabow shadowed State Rep. Jerry Torr on Jan. 27 at the Statehouse. Grabow attended the House Judiciary Committee hearing and watched the legislative session to learn more about the day-to-day responsibilities of a state legislator.
Governor makes appointments – Gov. Eric Holcomb has reappointed Carmel residents James Litten, president of F.C. Tucker Company, and Douglas Rose, president of Irwin R. Rose & Co., to the Indiana Real Estate Commission. He also appointed Carmel resident Richard Leirer, a surgeon with the VFW Dept. of Indiana, to the Indiana Veterans Affairs Commission.
Old Town Design Group scholarship –Old Town Design Group, based in Carmel, has established the Orchard Project Scholarship to provide tuition assistance to a Hamilton County student preparing for a career in the construction industry. For the 2020-21 school year, the Orchard Project will award two $2,500 scholarships. Hamilton County high school seniors or undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll in a construction related program at an accredited college, university or technical school may apply. Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable will present speaker Stephen Towne at its meeting set for 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at Carmel City Hall, 1 Civic Square. Towne is an associate university at IUPUI. He will speak on his most recent book, “Surveillance and Spies in the Civil War.” The meeting is free and open to the public.
College scholarship – RoadRunner Auto Transport has a $1,500 college scholarship available to a full-time high school, college or university student between the 17 and 21 years old. Heirbrandt re-elected VP – Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt was once again elected vice president of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners East Central District during its annual conference. In his role, Heirbrandt will represent elected county commissioners in the East Central district of the state, which includes the following counties: Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Henry, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Tipton, Union and Wayne.

Governor’s Fellowship – Applications will be accepted through Feb. 28 for the 2020-2021 Governor’s Fellowship, a highly selective experience in Indiana state government that places fellows in various state agencies on a rotating basis throughout the year. The program is open to college graduates who receive their bachelor’s degrees in either the fall 2019 or spring 2020. Writing competition – Senior living community The Stratford is accepting applicants for its annual Silver Pen Writing Competition. The competition will award three local high school seniors with scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,500. Bank hires – Merchants Bank of Indiana has hired Annie Barbato and Rhonda J. Vandivier as treasury mnagement officers. Both employees are based at the company’s office in Carmel. Barbato brings seven years of prior banking experience from PNC Bank and has also held various roles in management and business banking. Vandivier previously worked at PNC Bank in various sales roles with the majority of her career in treasury management.
Merchants Bank expanding — Carmel-based Merchants Bank of Indiana unveiled plans to open a branch in Richmond as part of the company’s commitment to long-term growth. Seven Corners president – Carmel-based Seven Corners, Inc., a travel insurance and specialty benefits company, named Jeremy Murchland as president. Previously, Murchland was serving as senior vice president of sales and marketing. Prior to Seven Corners, Murchland served as vice president of business development for ALOM Technology as well as executive director of sales for Ingram Micro. Murchland received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Bellevue University.
Jiffy Lube honored for art – Jiffy Lube of Indiana recently received the Americans for the Arts’ national Arts and Business Partnership Award, one of only 10 U.S. companies honored and the first company in Indianapolis to receive this award. Jiffy Lube of Indiana’s “Every Part Matters” project started as a way to cover up graffiti at a local store and has progressed into partnership with the Arts Council of Indianapolis. In addition to supporting and hiring local artists, they’ve also created a new apprentice program that will give paid experience to emerging artists. Two of the murals are in Carmel.
Baker Hill hire – Carmel-based Baker Hill, a financial technology provider, has hired Todd Juracek as chief revenue officer. Juracek will assume responsibility for revenue-generation strategy and execution to maintain Baker Hill’s record growth from 2019. The company supports more than 20,000 bankers originating loans while managing more than $1.3 trillion in commercial loans for its client roster.
Firm hires chief innovation officer – Carmel-based Katz, Sapper & Miller, an accounting and consulting firm, has named Fady Qaddoura, former controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis, as its first chief innovation officer, effective Jan. 13.Qaddoura joins KSM after a decade in public service, first for the Indiana General Assembly, then the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development and Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, before being appointed the controller and CFO for the City of Indianapolis by Mayor Joe Hogsett in 2016.
Bicycle Friendly Business – The League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of Carmel with a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Business award, earning it a place alongside 1,366 businesses across the country contributing to a movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America. Yoga training scholarship – Owners of The Hot Room, a hot yoga and hot Pilates studio, have created The Hot Room Leadership Institute Scholarship for People of Color. The full-tuition scholarship is open to any self-identified person of color who would like to deepen his or her yoga practice and gain skills to lead yoga classes. The scholarship will be available for each training hosted by The Hot Room Leadership Institute, a school for dedicated practitioners. Visitation policy – With the escalation of flu-like cases, Franciscan Health is has implemented a temporary visitation policy at its Carmel hospital. Only immediate family as identified by the patient or the patient’s designated representative will be allowed to visit. Visitors younger than 18 are not permitted unless they are seeking medical care or are the parents of pediatric patients (exceptions are made for postpartum visits).
