CarmelFest will be a smaller celebration this year.

Organizers have decided to cancel the annual Independence Day parade and CarmelFest Has Talent competition, which takes place on both days of the July 3-4 festival.

“While we regret having to make these difficult decisions, we feel it is in the best interest of our patrons and festival participants to place their safety as our first priority,” CarmelFest Chairman James Bednarski said.

The fireworks show is still set to take place at 9:45 p.m. July 4. CarmelFest organizers expect to release information in the coming weeks on where and how the show can be seen.

The planning committee is expected to decide the fate of other aspects of the festival in the coming weeks. The festival held in Civic Square typically includes a children’s area, marketplace, vendors and more.

CarmelFest has been a tradition in Carmel for the past 30 years. The event is presented by the Rotary Club of Carmel. It takes 300 volunteers to run the festival, which attracts approximately 55,000 visitors each year.
