Carmel police said they are prepared for a protest in the Arts & Design District this afternoon.

A social media post lists a Black Lives Matter peaceful protest at 5 p.m. near Main Street and Range Line Road in downtown Carmel. CPD Lt. J.J. Semester said police are aware of the possibility of a protest but said they have not been contacted by organizers.

“We don’t have any more information than what’s been posted on social media,” Semester said. “We are planning that there will be one, but we don’t know whether there will be one person or many people.”

Semester said CPD has increased its presence in Carmel in recent days as some protests in Indianapolis turned violent over the weekend.

“We have taken extra steps to make sure we have extra patrol coverage,” he said. “We also have officers on standby who are ready to respond if needed.”

CPD provided assistance to Indianapolis police over the weekend, Semester said.
